Excellence Awards
The Toquaht Achievement and Excellence Awards recognize achievements of Toquaht citizens in the areas of community services, academics, and athletics and sports. A citizen can be nominated by another Toquaht community member, including family, friends, and Toquaht Nation leadership or staff. The award recipients are announced by August 31st each year.
The following awards are named in honor of exceptional Toquaht individuals who made significant contributions in the respective areas of service, achievement, and excellence. They celebrate the efforts of Toquaht Elders who paved the way for all Toquaht citizens to succeed in various fields.
Community Services Award
This award celebrates Toquaht citizens who have made valuable contributions to the community. It is named after taayi ḥaw̓ił t̓iit̓skiisup (Bert Mack), who dedicated 60 years of his life to leading the community. He began his leadership journey at the young age of 18 and was supported by his father, taayi ḥaw̓ił maaʔaqʔiiḥ (Cecil Mack), until Cecil’s passing in 1978. Bert’s tireless work and dedication played a significant role in enhancing the well-being of the Toquaht community, particularly during the Treaty negotiations.
At the time, housing in remote communities was almost non-existent under the INAC system. However, on two separate occasions spanning several decades, Toquaht chiefs purchased settlements that included housing. One was located at hac̓aaqis (Stewart Bay), and the other was at Pine Street, in the District of Ucluelet, which had several houses for sale. Toquaht citizens were able to purchase these homes, and Bert and his wife, Lillian, lived in one of them for more than 40 years, along with Cecil until his passing in 1978.
Academic Excellence Award
This award recognizes Toquaht citizens who demonstrate a commitment to excellence and learning in any subject. The award is named after taayii ḥaw̓ił maaʔaqʔiiḥ (Cecil Mack), whose lifelong dedication to learning continues to inspire the Toquaht Nation today. Cecil was a strong advocate for the land rights of the Toquaht Nation and urged the governments of British Columbia and Canada to address the land issues faced by First Nations in the province.
Athletics and Sports Award
This award recognizes Toquaht citizens who have demonstrated excellence or achievement in sports and athletics. It is named after čaamata yakawaʔaḥ (Phillip Mack), a citizen who excelled in sports and was committed to hard work, teamwork, and dedication to his personal best.
